Sadly, when I move I have to start from scratch! If you read the warning labels on many of the chemical products you will see people should not use them when pregnant...if something like that could harm an unborn child, can you imagine the long term effects on you? Besides, looking at this pic should turn you away from weaves http://abcnews.go.com/blogs...

Re: Why I am Natural

"I must say the dried out hair, the breakage, and the scalp scars were not worth the hassle."

hahaha, i tried to s-curl my hair in 8th grade and pus-filled bumps ended up lining my scalp for a year. that was my only foray into something i had no business making a foray into.

It’s plain to see this is a constant concern with some Black women. We’re some stylish folks aint we?? Hairstyle is important, sometimes a bodily hazard. And you know what, we aren’t the only ones with idiosyncratic social kinks. Every group of people have their own “quirky issues” and what not.

The problem I know some of my relatives and homegirls have is they are hard pressed to find a stylist who “knows” how to care for natural hair to really make it look good without looking too nappy.

Nappy - you know, the tightly wound hair follicle curliness found in many people with African heritage.

Perm is for some. Not for others. And some sisters (black women) with aging grayish/silver hair and/or mixed heritages possess unruly hair texture that, in its natural state, quite frankly may not look good to the wearer.…or better yet, they may not know how to make it look really good.

Pressed, permed, relaxed natural, weave, wig. All of these concerns are REAL concerns. For us to engage in a discussion concerning black women hairstyles, we have to truly understand this is no trivial issue.

Some sisters “do what they have to do” for their professional jobs, church appearances, swimming in pools etc., which really should not be a consideration. We are what we are. We are who we are. In a perfect world, the others should be the ones to adapt, not us.

Too bad many people have been engrained with the notion that black women look better with pressed hair. I think if we change our perspective on our ethnicity and understand it better, and investigate our cultural roots, then we won’t have a problem being “US -- natural hair and all.

Now about Olympic Gold Medal Champion Gabby…

I just hate the fact that the ‘hard news media outlets’ decided to take a minor social commentary derived off SOCIAL NETWORKS and made it HEADLINE NEWS. I mean, they attached a small commentary to a cultural ground breaking American historical achievement that is totally irrelevant in the context of what she accomplished.

I tell you, the agents of news media will promote and broadcast whatever nonsense and crap they decide. If they decide an opinion or event or trendy topic is newsworthy, they’ll report it as news.

As I get older, I know why people don’t trust the news and rely on their “own” sources for info and awareness.

Re: Please, Stop Missing the Big Picture Here!

we're so indundiated with freedoms and liberties, that a lack of self-control is attributed to "illness." seems to me, mentally ill or not, he saw fit to equip his apt room with booby traps, undoubtedly adding to the number of lives injured or destroyed if the local swat team did not intervene and diffuse the wire trips. it's well documented that krazy and or unstable people have the ability to excercise cognition and process complicated thoughts like a "normal" human being. basically his actions proved him temporarily "sane" and "stable." i personally think he was a twisted individual with regrettable access to firearms and a very disturbing willingness to bring his imagination to life.

the situation is magnified, or to a broader extent the story is big b/c of the location of the incident, the timing of the event, and the juxtoposition of his atrocities to the release date of a 'batman' movie. the 'sensationalism' of this ordeal is the only reason media outlets are covering it. however i notice your sensibilities in this article revolve around the lack of humane effort placed into understanding a huge segment of our population afflicted with mental/behavioral issues. i applaud you for highlighting an issue that may be the reason behind this whole tragedy, an issue that is definitely flying way below the radar.

however i don't believe our general lack of concern for unstable people merits a conclusive answer to why this guy did what he did. without more research, observation and empircal studies that claim is just conjecture. mentally unstable or just a bad azz wierdo lookin for attention?? However, you contend there's a version of specious leadership takin' over many a men because of the company they keep. I argue all of us, men, women and anyone in between undergo the same dynamics of human existence thay may lift us or bring us down. Overall my sentiments echo yours expounded in the concluding paragraph, that is, the collective combination of honesty, respect, dignity, confidence, and sound judgement are noble qualities found in a quality adult, and in this particular instance, what makes a man. My only addition, of couse, would be someone who tries to adhere to the golden rule. That rule, in my opinion, is the basis of all law and societal contracts.

Re: R. Unlike child support, mothers are not jailed, even with multiple Contempt of Court ruling against them for violating the fathers' court ordered visitation rights.

George R.
